96FM Philishave Tracer Wind and Wave Pro-Am ’85 – Images by Peter Matulich

WA surf contest promoter Tim Duff ran the 96FM Philishave Tracer Wind and Wave Pro-am ’85 held at Trigg Point Nov 6-10, 1985. The contest was ASP ‘A’ Rated and had $50,000 in cash and prizes.

It featured the top pro surfers on the ASP circuit including World Champions Tom Curren (USA), Tom Carroll (AUS) and Martin Potter (UK).

In additional to the spectacle of top class surfing on a local surf break, spectators were also treated to a spectacular aerial display by vintage aircraft and other entertainment.

The pro contest was won by 1985/86 World Champion Tom Curren (USA).

The contest received a lot of media coverage on local TV and was a big event on WA’s surfing calendar.

Len DibbenI was one of the judges at that first Pro-Am contest, it was a real success with electronic score board and all.

Scarborough artist/photographer/surfer Peter Matulich was among the crowd of spectators on the beach and captured these images of the world class surfers in action at Trigg Point.

Peter MatulichIt is amazing that there were five world champions in this contest at Trigg. ie Tom Curran. Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Barton Lynch & Occy. Tim Duff did a terrific job getting them all to Trigg for the contest.
