Ric Chan’s coverage of 1969 Australian Surf Titles in WA.

In 1965 young New Zealand surfer and photographer Ric Chan moved from New Zealand and landed in Brisbane Australia seeking adventure.

RicI brought my Pentax camera & second hand £26 600mm lens to shoot surf. For a couple of years I toured the East Coast of OZ chasing waves, women & adventure in my gold coloured VW Kombi van, which I built behind Jack Knight’s parent’s apartment in North Steyne. I earned $’s taking surf photos and selling them to Surf Magazines. I may be Australia’s first Chinese surfer/surf photographer.

RicOn one of my surf trips, I met top surfers Wayne Dale and Lane Habib (South Australia). It was Lane who talked me into going to South Australia. I was a free spirit and thought why not! In Adelaide I met John Arnold who commissioned me to travel from SA to WA to cover the 1969 Australian Surfing Titles and design a movie ticket/poster for Paul Witzigs’ Evolution surf film.

The following images are Ric Chan’s photographic coverage of the ’69 Australian Surfing Titles. The design of the poster sized Evolution movie ticket is covered in the next SDS blog.

Ric was/is a flamboyant surf photographer. He infamously rowed out into the oversized Margs Main Break line-up in a row boat to shoot the surf contest.

RicWA contest official Trevor Burslem (dec’d) would call out the giant sets over the PA, to warn me of any big sets in-bound. I was only 26 years old at the time and had no fear back then!

RicI liked what I saw in WA during the ’69 Titles and after finalising commitments in Adelaide I returned to WA later in the year. This time I drove my gold kombi across the Nullarbor, which was an unpaved road of bull dust. I surfed Cactus on route and saw a giant shark in the line-up and paddled straight in as I was the only person out. Then my kombi broke down after I hit a pot hole which was at least 3ft deep. The Kombi came to a grinding halt…nothing I did would make it go! An hour later a young guy stopped & asked if he could help…..he told me the carbie was flooded and to wait a while. We tore down some trees & lit a fire to keep warm & about another hour later, he told to fire up the motor and it worked! I continued on towards Perth.

Ric In WA I scored a job as a DJ in the Sheraton Down Under Disco. After that I joined Independent Newspapers as a photo journalist. I also did voice overs, modelled and presented for Jeans West and DJ’d at Gobbles Nightclub until 1985, then I headed to Bali to manage the Cheaters Night Club on the Kuta entertainment strip. But that’s another story…….

I’m like a flower in the wind and like to spread pollen all over the place!

1976 Ian ‘Kanga’ Cairns & Tony Hardy surfing North Point – Ric Chan images

Surf photographer Ric Chan captured these images of WA’s finest surfers of the 70s Ian ‘Kanga’ Cairns and Tony Hardy charging solid waves at North Point in 1976.

Both Kanga & Tony won WA State Surfing Titles and were finalists at the National level.

Ian went to Hawaii and in December 1973 and won the Smirnoff Pro event at Sunset Beach from Hawaiian Jeff Hakman. He won other big events in the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1975 and World Cup events in 1976 and 1980. Source: Wikipedia.

1980s Bali Photo Gallery by Ric Chan with comments from Peter Neely #2

Perth based photo-journalist Ric Chan started going on surf trips to Bali in the early 80s. In 1985 he was lured to Bali to help set up and run Cheaters Night Club in Kuta’s entertainment strip, near the famous Peanuts Club.

Ric lived in Bali until ’91 and then returned to his native NZ after his wife Sami passed away. Ric and his sons Taron & Tao settled in NZ’s North Island.

This is a glimpse of Ric’s 80’s Bali photo gallery and a taste of quieter times in Bali.

Ric ChanPeter Neely is an old mate who was in Bali when I was there.

Peter runs the web site INDO SURF and LINGO  www.indosurf.com.au  and has provided background comments on some of Ric’s Bali pics.

Photo: 1983 Steve Koehne socialising with locals at Sri Lanka surf break at Nusa Dua. Ric Chan pic.

Ric Chan – I think it’s Made Kasim with the babe, I dont remember who the dood with his head down was. Steve might recall. I don’t recall shooting any Bali shots from a boat, but it appears I must have done!

Peter Neely – It’s a charming “vintage” b&w shot, even with an offering on the ground. But it’s not a shop I know, looks like a tailors shop maybe?

The single fin painted surfboard would probably be worth a bit these days though? 😉

Photo: 1982 Bali surfer Gede Narmada with Nev surfboard at Kuta Reef. Ric Chan pic.

Peter Neely – Gede was one of the first Balinese to regularly surf Padang, big Sanur and Nusa Dua.  Gede (“G’Day”) started Uluwatu Surfshop on Jalan Legian on the “outskirts” of Kuta (these days between Poppies 1 and 2).

Peter NeelyGede was in the first pioneer generation of Balinese surfers, yet he wasn’t born in Kuta like all the others. Originally from Gianyar on the north-east coast, in 1969 aged just 14 Gede push-biked 20km from the main city of Denpasar when he first heard about western hippies teaching Kuta kids how to surf. He sat transfixed on the beach watching stoned naked tourists frolic in the surf, then he borrowed boards and got right into it. He soon made friends with Made “Joe” Darsana and shared his surfboard, taking turns, often the only two Balinese surfers in the water at Halfway. Gede soon became one of the first true big wave Balinese surfers, a brave standout at big Padang-Padang.

1977 Hang Ten WASRA Schoolboys Surfing Champs at Trigg

Updated 11 December 2016 thanks to Stephen Koehne.

Colin Earle entered all 3 age divisions, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19, winning U/15 and U/19 and placing 2nd in U/17. I think they changed the rules after that event.

The Nationals were held in Jan 1978 at Victor Harbour and Middleton Beach, South Australia. Colin was only able to surf in one division and picked U/15 as it was the division he was most likely to win. Steve and Ant Corrigan were power-houses from Bondi and Queenslander Joe Engel dominated and won the U/19 at the Nationals. Dave Mac was on that state team in U/15 too. Dave’s dad and Bill Girdwood were team chaperones.

———————————————

The 1977 Hang Ten WASRA Schoolboys Surfing Championships were held at Trigg Beach in average surf conditions. There was a large pod of WASRA officials & celebrity surfers in attendance to watch the junior talent.

Contest results are unknown, but it is understood Colin Earle won the under 17 age division.

Surf journo/photographer Ric Chan was there to capture the action in & out of the water (mainly the latter).

1980s Bali Photo Gallery by Ric Chan #1 (Updated 23 Nov 2016 and 1 Feb 2017).

Updates:

23 November 2016 included comments by Peter Neely www.indosurf.com.au .

1 February 2017 revised Peter Neely’s comment on 1980s Kuta Beach locals image.

Photo: 1980 Kuta Beach locals.

Ric Chan – One is Ketut Menda and I think the other is Froggie.

Peter Neely – I too first thought the surfer on the right was Little Froggy from Legian who later worked at Troppo Zone for 20 years. But Bobby Radiasa, Mr Gragajan Surfcamp himself from www.grajagan.com corrected me: “Surfer on the left is Made Muditha and right (smaller one) Nyoman Dira both from Banjar Legian Tengah”. Bobby would know! He was probably surfing with them this day at Kuta Reef, straight out from his family home.

PS. Most of those palm trees have been replaced by beachfront hotels now. Hard Rock Hotel and McDonalds.

Peter Neely – Looks like the carpark at Kuta Reef ?  The open top VW Safari was ideal for cruising around Bali, shame they don’t make them anymore.

Peter Neely – One of the best action photos I’ve seen of Sanur, Ric must have used a 1000mm lens or been in a boat

Peter Neely – Another excellent historical photo by Ric. Balangan peeling off at high tide, with Dreamland on the right. Now covered with a Suharto golf course, multi-level hotels carved into the cliffs, villas and cafes. But the waves are still the same.

Ric Chan – A cremation in Bali is a joyous occasion, not as sad depressing as in the West!

Peter Neely – You can still see colourful cremations like this on Kuta Beach every week or two, on the sand in front of the Jalan Kartika Plaza cemetery. This is where every Kuta local ends up before their ashes are spread into the surf inside Kuta Reef. Where I’d like some of my ashes floating around eternally, in the far distant future.
