In 1967 WA surfers Greg Wynne, Mike Byrom and Mike ‘Gruff’ Reynolds travelled to the East Coast of Oz chasing waves. In NSW the boys met up with former WA surfers Darryl McGowan & Nev Gangel and shared rental accommodation in Manly before heading up the East Coast.
These are Darryl McGowan’s comments and photos.
In NSW we shared a rental house and at times a crowded flat with the Manly crew. This is a photo of the house (rat hole) we all rented, my bed was in the closed in veranda second window from the left next to the toilet, which never allowed for a good night’s sleep.
We left the social life in Manly and headed up the coast to Crescent Heads.
We left Crescent Heads just before a massive southerly swell arrived, Crescent was twenty foot breaking across to the Bombie, that night we decided to head up to a place in Queensland we had heard about called Noosa. We drove through the night arriving about 4 am and on arriving could hear the waves and as it was a full moon could see the white water clearly. We proceeded to surf the next few months in perfect uncrowded conditions…..
I went my own way and had a good and successful time doing it. My wife is a Margaret River girl and we have been happily married for 45 years. After travelling and surfing around the globe we settled in Coolum Beach (near Noosa) where I had a successful mechanical business before retiring. We have two sons who have both done university degrees and are happy with their surfing, fishing & partying life.
My wife Prue and I have the fondest memories of Greg Wynne especially the Subiaco house and our pet kangaroo. We used the hallway dartboard as a rifle range with someone’s air rifle, that front door finished up with about 20 kilos of lead embedded in it.

After the East Coast surf trip Greg Wynne, Mike Byrom & Gruff returned to WA and became members of the popular The Young Blaydes band. Greg – bass guitar/lead vocalist, Mike – drummer & Gruff – roadie.
