World-renowned master of surf cinematography Jack McCoy is dropping in to the UWA Octagon Theatre on Saturday April 7, 2018 at 8pm, to share his life and passion for filming surf and surf culture.
Jack is regarded by many as the most accomplished and prolific surf film maker and cinematographer of all time. He’s made 25 surf films, received numerous international accolades and has worked on many TV commercials and several dramatised feature films including Endless Summer 2.
Born and bred in Hawaii, Jack McCoy made his way to Australia in 1970 and with encouragement from surf filmmaker Alby Falzon, began shooting still photographs. His work was soon featured regularly in Tracks magazine and after McCoy teamed up with Australian photographer Dick Hoole in 1975, both began shooting 16mm film. Tubular Swells, their well-reviewed first surf movie, was released in 1976 and Storm Riders (1982), their follow-up, premiered at the Sydney Opera House.

Along with Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew and Gordon Merchant, Jack McCoy is credited with having developed the blueprint for the modern ‘Dream Tour’ format of professional surfing with the Billabong Challenge events he staged and filmed in the mid to late 1990’s while he was living in Western Australia.
JACK – The Billabong Challenge was the template for what is now called “THE DREAM TOUR”. It was born in the North West. I was living down south at the time with my wife and her sister Tracy and George Simpson. Together we put a two-week trip with cameras rolling and the rest as they say is history. The how, what, why and where along with all the behind the scenes will be shared at our one-night special TALK STORY and if you ever had any questions about any of it, we’ll be there to reveal all. Hope to see you there.
