Pic 1: 25th October 1998 Sydney harbour.

I was about to turn 10! We were out for the day on a boat on Sydney Harbour, I think it was for my uncle’s birthday. Growing up, my family had a little 11ft Topper dinghy and my Dad taught us how to sail in between the Manly ferries and the rest of the harbour traffic. I mostly learnt that when you capsize, you gotta let go of the boat!

Fast forward 17 years…

Pic 2: December 2015 Geographe Bay

If you count the family boat, I’m now onto number 3! It may sound narcissistic, but Theapatra was named by Noel Roots, who kept calling me “Theapatra” as we sailed down the west coast of WA in his beautiful catamaran. After so many days enjoying the absolute pleasures of sailing on Sydney Harbour, and a few weeks edging down the west coast, I couldn’t help myself, I had to get a yacht for Geographe Bay! In the summer, when the moorings are full at Quindalup, she’s probably the smallest boat out there, but my tender evolution, from paddling a surfboard, to rowing a constantly deflating rib, has certainly earned her a place in the conversation. Her name stuck when I told my mum I’d bought another boat and moments after discussing a name she said, “Well, of course, she’s got to be called Theapatra!”

I’ve also included a picture of Yvette – Sydney’s most luxurious sailing yacht 🙂 I’ve just dropped charter guests off at Rose Bay Marina and I’m heading back out to the mooring.
