1950s-60s Christmas Calendars from Dunsborough Service Station

There has been a Service Station on the corner of Naturaliste Terrace and Dunn Bay Road Dunsborough since 1945. Before road alignments, the Service Station stood on the corner of Yallingup and Naturaliste roads Dunsborough.

Eric Guy and his wife Dorothy (R.I.P.) ran the Caltex Dunsborough Service Station from 1954 to 1978.  The Guys’ commenced business in the original Service Station before building a new Service Station on the same site in 1963. During this period the Dunsborough Service Station issued complimentary Christmas Calendars featuring South West tourist attractions to regular customers.

There is now a BP Service Station operating on the site.

These are Eric Guy’s Dunsborough recollections and vintage photos.

This is a brief story of my life in Dunsborough. I first started going to Dunsborough with my older brother Bob in 1948, we went mainly for the fishing which was great in those days.

In 1953 we noticed that the original Service Station had been closed down for some time, so my wife Dorothy and I decided to move down and open the place up and give it a go, that was in 1954, we built the new Service Station in the early sixties and run that until 1978 when I sold out.

We stayed in Dunsborough until 1988 and moved to Perth in November of that year.

Dunsborough Service Station Christmas Calendar images by Alexander Bain.

My father in law Alexander Bain took all the photos, the main reason was to use them for making up Christmas Calendars for me to give out to my good customers, they became quite collectable, I was giving them out from the late fifties and throughout the sixties. I’m happy to share the photos as they have been in the wardrobe for more than 50 years now.

In the late forties and into the fifties the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse supplies were delivered by sea, dropped off onto the beach at the cape, the lighthouse keepers had an ex-army Dodge 4WD similar to a jeep but much bigger to bring the supplies up to the lighthouse.

These aerial photos of Dunsborough by Alexander Bain were possibly taken from Boodge Guthrie’s aeroplane. Boodge had a landing strip on his farm on Caves Road near Moses Rock Road.

A big thank you to Eric Guy for sharing his recollections and vintage Alexander Bain images.  Thanks also to John Di Carlo, Rex Biddle & the Cape of Contrasts book 2001 for assisting with research.

Some of these vintage images were posted on the Perth Reflects Facebook page 7 July 2019.
