Representatives from WA Surfboard Clubs established the West Australian Surf Riders Assoc Inc (WASRA) in 1964 so that official teams could be sent to compete in the newly formed Australian Surfing Assoc National Titles. The inaugural WASRA President was Percy Trainer from the Scarborough Board Club. The Assoc names have since been changed to Surfing WA (1996) and Surfing Australia respectively.
In March 1964 the first State Surfing Titles were held at Yallingup over the Easter LWE. They were run by WASRA and sponsored by Ampol Petroleum Ltd.
