Bill Cosson’s surfing memories

Bill Cosson and his partner Miriam from Duncraig recently visited Yallingup in their new 4WD campervan. They are friends with Jill Redfern at Yallingup through a 4WD Car Club and Bill has a surfing background.

Bill In 1958 I used my carpentry skills to build himself a 16ft plywood Toothpick surfboard on my parent’s front verandah. The board had a painted white & varnish finish. I based the board on a scale model replica in a Motor Book.

From 1961-66 I lived in my parent’s shack at Falcon (near Mandurah) and I surfed nearby at Geary’s Shack. In 1966 my parents sold the Falcon shack and the family moved to North Beach.

In 1962 I purchased a new custom fibreglass Malibu surfboard from King & Cole surfboard factory on the corner of Salvado and Station roads in Wembley. Brian Cole measured me up for my first custom board. I subsequently snapped the board in the surf and Brian repaired it for me.

In the next photo I am holding a Len Dibben Malibu I purchased from Len. Regrettably, I have since sold both the Len Dibben & Cordingley malibu boards.

Thanks Bill, for sharing your surfing memories.
