At the State Longboard and Logger Titles held in solid waves at Yallingup over the weekend 20-21 February 2021, Margaret River competitor Bill Gibson found time to display some vintage surfboards shaped by WA surf industry & surfing legend Murray Smith.
Bill. “The floral designs on the surfboard were cut out by Len Hawke’s wife Jen and glassed into the board by Tony Harrison. The board has a rolled bottom and chisel back. It pre-dates v-bottom surfboards. Tony Harrison (Albany WA) owns the Flower Power board”.
Bill. “I found this Muzz board on Witchcliffe tip in Margaret River approx. 20 years ago. It had a good shape, so I re-glassed it and rejuvenated the board. Muzz thinks he made the board in his Scarborough factory circa 1975”.
Murray. “I sometimes forget what I shaped back in the 60’s, but the Kenyan Karpet was a good board in the era, which was about 1968”.
