Whoa, what is happening here, is it something in the salt water?
Back
in the pioneering days of WA surfing in the 50s & 60s and maybe 70s, we had
no vision that surfboard riders would continue surfing into their 70s and 80s.
But today there are large pods on these Septuagenarians surfing all over the WA
coastline. Some of these lads Bob Monkman (Yalls), Graham Walmsley (Mandurah),
Mick Marlin (Yalls) and Tony Harrison (Albany) are still competing in State Longboard
Championships.
Mike Bibby. “The idea for this blog came after a conversation with Jim King and Ian “Prive” Morris in the Yallingup carpark on the joys of old age and how it all seems to be downhill from here. I suggested to Jim and Bruce King it would be an opportune time to record those septuagenarians (and one octogenarian) still surfing at Yallingup, thinking there would be a maximum of 10. When we started to write down the names of the old boys (and girl) we were all surprised how many there are.”
This is a list of Septuagenarians & one octogenarian surfing Yallingup in March 2021:

These images of Yallingup Septuagenarians and Octogenarians were provided by Dunsborough photographer Bruce King.
Bruce King. “Maybe there’s a ‘Fountain of Youth’ in the sacred waters of the Yallingup Lagoon.” 😊
Jim’s reaction sums it up nicely “Crikey, there are more of these surfing oldies than grains of sand on the beach.” 😊
