1976 The Spot at Yanchep revisited
The Spot surf break near Yanchep (north of Perth) is a reef break that works all around the year. Like most metro beaches, it works best on a west swell with easterly offshore winds.
In 1970 Surf journo Doug White promoted The Spot in his weekly ‘On the Wave-Length’ column in the Sunday Times. Doug highlighted the good waves and an issue with surfers and fisherman accessing the surf break. See section highlighted below.
1970 Doug White’s article on the The Spot. Ex Sunday Times.
Peter Dyson. “Back in the 1960syou had to trespass across property owned by tycoon Alan Bond to get to the surf break called the Spot near Yanchep. My mates & I were amongst the first to surf the left hander. We would sneak past the gate to get to the waves.
I was dobbed in to Bondy by the guy who managed his property. Later at a
party, I met the guy who dobbed me in and he told me “I was the only bloke that never got
booked”. I told him nothing happened because the Dyson & Bond
families were friends!”
In 1976 NZ surf photographer Ric Chan & Trigg’s hottie Mick Black travelled to Yanchep and scored good waves at The Spot surf break.
Ric captured these surfing shots.
1976 Empty line-up at The Spot. 1976 Mick Black surfing a right at The Spot. 1976 Surf Photographer Ric Chan burying a rail at The Spot. 1976 Unidentified surfer on a good left at The Spot. 1976 unidentified rock hopping on inside reef at The Spot.
Perth’s urban sprawl has reached Yanchep and The Spot surf break gets crowded ☹
