Gary
Gibbon – “I’ve dug up a few vintage south west photos
you might be interested in.
The context as I
remember it, was that it was a warm, sunny, spring (October) day in 1976.
Further evidence of the unusually warm weather around that time is that the
guys are just wearing board shorts and light vests in the water. I ended up
down at Lefties near Gracetown with Andy Jones and Ross “Madhu” Anderson. I had
my photo gear with me and decided to take some shots of the boys, who were
mainly surfing Noisies. I had film in the camera that was way too fast for the
sunny conditions, so I apologise in advance for many of the shots being somewhat
overexposed looking.
The photos of Madhu going left from memory are of the left of Noisies, not Lefties. (It’s interesting, seeing these left hand waves, because you can see he’s surfing them well, but Madhu always used to tell me that he much preferred surfing rights. So you rarely ever used to see him at places like 3 Bears, even though he lived quite close to it.) He was pretty much surfing exclusively at Noisies. Andy may have slipped across to Lefties a couple of times, but I think most of his photos are of him going right. The two empty waves were taken south of Lefties and north of Noisies. The photo of Tony Hardy is Lefties. (I think it was Tony Hardy!)
So, it’s Noisies
with just a sprinkling of Lefties”
