Alfred Cove surfer Noel Sweeny was ‘Murf the Surf’ surf reporter for local radio station 6KY-NA in the mid-60s.
In 2020 Geraldton Guardian journalist Reuben Carder spoke to former WA surf reporter Noel Sweeny about his career as “Murf the Surf” with the story being published on July 28, 2020.
An excerpt follows:
Noel travelled to Geraldton many times with his “Surfaris” crew from Perth, riding waves with faces up to 10 feet at the outer reef at Coronation Beach, but never delivered a broadcast here.
Travelling around WA with five carloads of surfers, before the era of wetsuits, they wore football jumpers in the water in winter and parked in fields full of cattle, digging tracks to beaches.
His biggest local thrill was riding five successive peaks from the outside break at Coronation, he said: “It was a long paddle back out.”
