South of the river surfer Steve ‘Horny’ Campbell started hitch hiking down south in 1968 at age 15. By 1970 he had a car and was driving down every weekend chasing waves and girls. After he finished his trade apprenticeship, he went on a surf trip to the east coast before moving down south in 1974. He has lived and worked in the southwest since then.
This is a collection of Horny’s comments and SW pics.
Horny – I attended Bentley school with Gary ‘Gooselegs’ Vaughan. It was Gooselegs who gave me the nickname ‘Horny’ after he witnessed a funny incident in Yallingup car park.
I lost my left eye in a slingshot accident with my brother and mates at age 10.
Goose finished his apprentice as a welder. My mate John Fox finished his apprenticeship as an electrician and married a Busso girl. He is still an electrician in Busso.
I finished my electrician apprenticeship at age 20 and in ‘72 travelled over east to Phillip Island in Victoria and then onto Queensland for a couple of years.
I returned to the SW in 74 and lived on farms and had a job working on a mine at Capel.
