1975-76 Injidup images by Gary Gibbon

Retired Margaret River school teacher/surfer and now Prevelly Penguin Gary Gibbon, is a regular contributor to Surfing Down South.

Gary GibbonI’ve dug up a few vintage Injidup photos you might be interested in.

In general, I always loved surfing the Bay, especially Car Park & P – Break (which was a lot more fickle, but still sweet). Between 1975 and 1981, during which time I often lived close by, I managed to score quite a lot of uncrowded and relatively uncrowded waves there. So it was pretty natural, that every so often, I’d pick up the camera, instead of my board, to bottle a few memories. Have done my best to accurately identify the subjects, but apologies if I got any wrong. In my defence, it was a fair while ago.

Photos 1 – 9 were all taken in 1975. Photos 10 – 33 were all taken in 1976.

Photo 2. I think I’ve given you this one before Jim, but I’m going to give it to you again, because it is a pretty good shot. That’s Phil Newman and Andy Jones on the right there, both amping. We were rolling in that FC, which was Phil’s car at that time.

Photo 3. But you haven’t seen the little brother companion shot.

Photo 5. Tony Hardy used to pop up from Margaret River occasionally and put on a bit of a backhand show.

Photos 6 – 8. I’m quite sure I got this right. Al Fixter and Ray Nott were the only two out at P’s this day and put on quite a show, The sequence is of Al and Ray’s is the take – off.

Photos 10 & 11. are companion pieces in a way. It’s a spring afternoon in 1976 and Andy is surfing bare – back because we’d surfed earlier and he wanted to have another quick one before going home for a sleep. (He worked shifts @ Dunsborough Bakery.) The photo of me is nothing special surfing or wave – wise, except you can see, I’ve snuck inside to get an insider, whilst bareback Andy stands out being surrounded by a posse of wet – suited surfers out the back. I don’t remember who was commandeering my camera equipment at this time, but thanks for the memory.

Photo 14. Flight 😊

Photo 15. It was a state round held @ Car Park during 1976. Ian Cairns was back in the WA from overseas and interstate for a period and I think WASRA were happy having him in the contest. I was a bit narked off that I couldn’t surf Car Park (was never all that interested in contests), so I decided to shoot some photos instead. I think Kanga may have won that round.

Photo 16. Tim … Was it Roberts Jim? I think you may have found his surname once before for me. A good knee boarder and did some stone mason work in the SW.

Photo 17. Pretty sure this was Mark Fitzpatrick another good kneeboarder back then.

Photo 18. Mark Moody, I think. Very sad to hear of his recent passing in Bali.

Photos 19 – 22. Ross (Madhu) Anderson was always a standout surfer @ Car Park.

Photo 25. Not a great place to be for the guy in the foreground, but nevertheless a fine wave.

Photo 26. The Point! Funny place! It’s one of those waves you never hear much about, even today. In my time, I only ever had a few surfs there, which were nothing to write home about. I reckon it always looked best in spring, but back in those days, Carpark invariably looked good too and was generally uncrowded. So why would I worry about traipsing around to the Point?

Photo 27. At one of the occasional beach breaks that popped up in between swells @ the Bay. They’d usually only last a couple of days, but good waves were just about guaranteed.
