1955 Ting Hammond’s Chevrolet sedan at Yallingup

In 1933 Thomas ‘Ting’ Hammond purchased approx. one hundred acres of land at Yallingup in front of the historic Caves House Hotel site owned then by the state government. He built rental cottages and grew oats on the land.

Ting and his wife Silvia ‘Dorrie’ Doreen (nee Burkett) bought up their sons the late William ‘Garth’ and Graham ‘Jack’ on Yallingup hill.

Ting was a Dental Surgeon and had an effective medical suite with dental surgery and denture manufacturing workshop at the ‘big house’ on Yallingup hill.

Ting’s car was a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air 4 Door sedan. 235 cubic inch six cylinder with a three-speed box and top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).

Garth (RIP) recalled “The car was powerful for its day and there were some “adventurous” runs to Busselton in this car, when my old man was away.

The number plate BSN 1991 on Ting’s Chev has been retained by the Hammond family. The plates are now with Garth’s wife Patricia.

In 1955 WA surfing pioneer John Budge snapped this photo of the Hammond family with Ting’s 1954 Chevrolet sedan in Valley Road Yallingup. Three of the five historic Hammond rental cottages and the ‘big house’ are in the background.
