This a collection of Yallingup Beach photos from 1957. The vintage photos have been sourced from surf pioneers/photographers John Budge, Jim Keenan and the late Brian Cole.
Beach
Murray Smith (WA surf industry legend and surf champion). “Back when you could leave your board on the beach without it being stolen.” 😊
Surfboards
Balsa surfboards where introduced into Australia in 1956 by an American surf team competing in an International Surfing Carnival held in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Melbourne Victoria. WA surfers obtained several of the US surfboards and made homemade copies from balsa wood purchased from Boans department store in Perth city. Polyurethane and fiberglass surfboards replaced the light weight but brittle Balsa boards in the early 60s.

Surfing
John Budge paddled out at Yallingup main break with his Kodak Brownie camera stuffed in a sock tied around his neck to take these water shots. They may be the first surfing water shots in WA!
Caves House Hotel
Caves House Hotel Yallingup has been a watering hole for surfers since the mid 1950s.
John ‘Budgie’ Budge’s vintage beach photos have been archived by the State Library of WAand are available for public viewing.
Budgie’s and Brian Cole’s vintage photos are also on display at the WA Surf Gallery Aravina Estate Yallingup and on rubbish bin covers at Yallingup courtesy of the City of Busselton.
We are lucky Budgie & Brian Cole took these photos and recorded the beginning of surf history in WA.
