In the 1970s & early 80s former NZ surf photographer Ric Chan lived in Scarborough and was a busy man on Perth’s social scene. When he wasn’t surfing, he worked as a surf photographer, surf journalist, fashion photographer/model, night club DJ and who knows what else!
In the mid-80s Ric headed off to Bali to set up and run Cheaters Night Club on the Kuta entertainment strip. He also worked as a photojournalist for Bali News in Denpasar and undertook other entrepreneurial tasks.
This is a snapshot of Ric’s media images from the 80s.
West Australia
Bali
Ric Chan – I was commissioned to do water shots for a movie company back then, and they gave me a camera inside a huge water housing, to get the shots.
I got nailed by a big cleanup set at Uluwatu and it took me about 2 hours to get back in after losing my fins.
I was totally worked over, but I’m still alive.
I won’t be doing that again!
Ric Chan – “A cremation in Bali is a joyous occasion, not as sad depressing as in the West!“
In 1987 Ric led a couple of Perth businessmen to Gili Nanggu island on Lombok.
Ric Chan. “The Island was owned by Mr Gede Badjra who was the owner of a large furniture store in Mataram. He passed away a few years ago and the island was sold (I gather, by his family) for around 250,000U$, and has been developed further. There are three islands in the small group and is not too far from Lembar, the port on Lombok.
A couple of architects from Perth came to the island to survey it for a possible investment, but the potential investor went broke not long after the guys returned to WA….once again, I missed out on getting rich!”
New Zealand
Ric Chan. “Some people thought I had fallen off the edge of the earth in the 90s, but I had returned to NZ after the loss of my wife Sami in Bali.
In NZ I scored some work in radio voice overs and some parts in a couple of TV series. I have five credits as an actor in NZ 1997-2002.
I appeared in three episodes of the popular fantasy TV series Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001) filmed on location in NZ. Lucy Lawless played Xena, a warrior who used her formidable fighting skills to help those unable to defend themselves. I played the characters: Master Swordsman, Healer and Jiu.
When I was playing the nasty Master Swordsman, I was seen gloating after I smashed her sword – then she punched my lights out!
Them were the days!!!
Ric was a prolific photographer and many of his images survived 20+ years storage in Graham Noakes’ salvage yard at Margaret River.
