In 1964 the City Beach Surf Riders Club Inc (Est 1962) was at the top of its game and chock full of surfing talent.
City Beach surfers Alex ‘Zac’ Kochanovich and Barry King were the Open Mens and Junior Mens Champions respectively at the inaugural State Surfing Championships held at Yallingup in 1964. They represented West Australia and Australia at the first World Surfing Championships held at Manly NSW in 1964.
The City Beach Tea Rooms (built in the 1930s, re-constructed in 1948 and abolished in early 1970s) were the unofficial headquarters of the City Beach Surf Riders club (CBSR).
The Club competed successfully in surfing contests and enjoyed social activities away from the beach, including prawning nights at the Swan River. In 1964 they went on an outing to the Swan River to do some skurfing. Photos courtesy of Peter Bothwell.
In the mid-60s the late Rod Bothwell (Peter Bothwell’s elder brother) collected vintage Ford cars.
In 2009 the Club held a reunion lunch at the City Beach cafe. These are Martin Pardoe’s surfing recollections.
The City Beach Surf Riders Club is still going strong today.
