Flashback to the 1960s. A time when WA Board Clubs were in vogue and club members surfed and socialised together in club colours.
Members competed in Intra & Inter Club contests and State Titles run by the West Australian Surf Rider Association (WASRA incorporated 1964). You had to be a board club member to participate in the events.
Collection of social Board Club photos from the 60s.
In 1963 Cottesloe surfers Tina Daly, Jeanne Abbott & Stefanie Meyers were members of the West Girls Board Club, WA’s first female Board Club. The girls competed in the first State Titles held at Yallingup in 1964.
Ashley Jones. “Kim ‘Dish’ Standish, from Yallingup Board Club mocked us Cottesloe Board Club members, constantly calling us the Canaries, because of our Yellow Parkas and board shorts, he did it with a high pitch, birdlike squeal.”
Ian Mitchell. “In 1966 at age 14, I got my first ever surfboard. It was an 8’11” Cordingley from 329 Hay Street Subiaco and cost $88.I was concerned it was too short and would spin out
My Cottesloe surfing mate Phil Taylor had a 9ft surfboard.
My mother bought me a parka and matching boardies, which you normally only had if you were in a board club – this was a particularly exclusive board club, as I was the only member! Phil Taylor, Ricky Lobe, George Simpson and Ducky Dermer gave me shit for having a parka and matching boardies and not being in a board club!
Michael Bibby was my neighbour in Cottesloe. He was older than me and a member of the Cottesloe Board Club and then Yallingup Board Club. And a bloody good surfer”
Bill Gibson. “In 1969 I joined the Dolphins Surf Riders Club as a cadet at age 14 with Tommie Blaxell, Trevor Kenyon, Jim McFarlane, Ray Nelmes, Kevin Merifield and a few of the guys that hung out at the White Sands pub in Scarborough.”

North Coast Surf Riders Club was formed by ex Scarborough surfers Robin ‘Skullcap’ Sutherland, Greg ‘Pants’ Laurenson and Mike Wynne in 1969.
Errol Considine. “My brother Jeff was the first President of the Club… and he designed the first club logo & cut the silk screen at home for the t-shirts – which were chocolate brown with an orange logo….both very cool colours then. I think Jeff & Gooselegs came up with the ‘69’ thing – naughty boyz!
I remember one North Coast Club comp on a Sunday at Halls Head with perfect 1-2 foot long left handers….it was a big swell and Southerly wind…and bloody freezing – that was before they built the groynes at the nearby mouth of the Mandurah estuary….have never seen waves at Halls Head again!!– Place getters Mike Wynne 1st and Bob Monkman 2nd.
Russell Quinliven, from Scarborough was a Junior member….I remember the boys got Russell (who was about 12 or 13, or maybe 14) really drunk at a club Sunday arvo keg….we took him home to Scarborough in Jeff’s Mini and kicked him out near Luna Park😊.”
Industry Surf Teams
In the 60’s WA surfboard manufacturers introduced their own Surf Teams for promotion and surf equipment testing purposes.
The beach scene changed in the late 60s and early 70s when surfers left the Club culture seeking solitude free surfing remote surf breaks down south and up north.
The 2000s has seen a resurgence in board club activities and surf contests at Club, State and National levels are popular again. 😊
City Beach Surf Riders Inc was founded in 1961 and is still operating today! It is one of the oldest board riders’ clubs in Australia.
