Surf photographer Ric Chan left his homeland NZ during the mid-60s and toured the East Coast of OZ in his gold VW Kombi meeting the locals and snapping surf shots.
In early 1969 Ric met South Australian surfer Lane Habib while shooting a surf advt. in Queensland. Lane travelled down the east coast with Ric and convinced him to try his luck in South Australia.
Lane Habib (South Aust). “When Ric came to SA. I introduced him to John Arnold, Wayne Lynch was doing shapes there at the time. Ric did promo stuff for the Evolution surf film, wrote an article for Surfing International mag titled ‘These Goofies Three‘ featuring Wayne Lynch, Colin Smith and myself….and we did other photo shoots which I heard were in a mag later in WA.”
John Arnold Surf Machines commissioned Ric to travel from Adelaide to Western Australia, to cover the first Australian Surfing Titles held in WA May 1969 and design a movie ticket/poster for Paul Witzigs’ 1969 Evolution surf film.
An original Evolution movie ticket/poster is on display at WA Surf Gallery Aravina Estate Yallingup courtesy of Ric Chan.
Ric also modelled O’Neill wetsuits for John Arnold Surfboards in SA. The featured O’Neill’s Surf John wetsuit cost $29 and was available in red, green, blue & orange.
In late 1969 Ric left SA and drove his gold Kombi van across the Nullarbor Plain to WA.
