In 1966 WA competitor Murray Smith was on the East Coast preparing for the Australian Surfing Titles to be held at Coolangatta Queensland.
Murray Smith. “Prior to the event I was free surfing at Crescent Heads on NSW’s north coast with WA surfers Mick Layzell, Neil Pegler & Boz Cummings when we met up with Oz surfing legend Charles Justin ‘Snowy’ McAlister (NSW).
Snowy was on his way to the contest at Coolangatta to display Duke Kahanamoku’ssurfboard. The board was shaped for the Duke to ride during his visit to Australia in the summer of 1914/15 and normally sits under glass at the Freshwater SLSC in NSW.
Snowy kindly allowed us WA boys to have our photo taken with the Duke’s historic surfboard.“
