Dunsborough surfer Tony Waldock is a former surf journo and member of Scimitar Board Riders Club.
These are Tony’s 1980s Scimitar recollections and photos.
Scimitar Board Riders – History
Scimitar Board Riders club was established in 1975/76 by a group of mostly Trigg Beach/Point surfers.
Some of the early members included Randall Owens (Club President), Bruce Hocking, Shaun Atkinson, Steve Hood, Mark Wells, Steve ‘Hog’ Hannett and Peter Davidson. Jeff Thomson took over as president after Randall Owens.
I joined the club in 1982 when monthly meetings were held at the Karrinyup Tavern, and new members were required to down a jug of red wine! The Club President was Brent Stewart, Greg ‘Groggy Bear’ Hansen was Treasurer and I was Secretary. At each meeting I produced a colourful newsletter which covered Scimitar Member exploits over the month (copy of newsletter unavailable!).
The 1980’s was the decade for Scimitar. At least four members of the 1980 WA National Scholastic’s team were members of Scimitar (Damon Eastough, Dave Macaulay, Steve Hannett, Matt Branson).
Other Scimitar members along with those mentioned, who featured in WA State Teams throughout the 80’s, included Richie Cardwell, Paul Cunningham, Peter Bengough and John ‘Tuck’ Kildahl.
After a series of very successful fund-raising parties, by 1985 Scimitar Board Riders was flush with money. A club vote was made on what to do with the money and of course it was spent on another party!
In the late 70s/early 80s Star Surf Shop Perth City promoted an annual club-based contest called the Star Winter Cup.
Scimitar won the Star Winter Cup three times in a row 1978, 1979 & 1980.
