Barry ‘Baz’ Young grew up in South Australia and started surfing there in 1962 (age 15) and was a founding member of the “Roader’s” (Seaview Road Board Riders) in SA.
While on an East Coast surf trip in 1966, he met a group of WA surfers in Crescent Head NSW, including Arty Sherburn, John Balgarnie, John Staley and Murray Smith and after hearing about the ‘land of lefts’ had to come to WA.
He first came to WA in 1968 on a surf trip. In the 8 months Baz lived here he came second to Peter Bothwell in the ‘68 State titles and was a member of Southern Surfriders Club. Having a clearer picture of what laid ahead Baz returned home to S.A. and shaped boards for John Arnold’s Surf Shop in Adelaide.
Baz and his wife Judy came back to live here permanently in 1973, and after a few years as a clothing agent for a number of interstate companies he secured the Rip Curl and Quiksilver labels and rode the wave of growth in surf clothing and accessories for twenty years.
Along the way Baz won two Australian surfing titles (The Senior Mens, over 28’s in 1978 and over 35’s in 1983). Both events were held in WA.
He retired in 1996 and moved down to Yallingup permanently with his family.
Baz loves surfing the Maldives atolls and has travelled there regularly since 1988.
