A Judges observation platform with an Ampol flag was set up on the reef at Yallingup for the inaugural WA State Titles in 1964. The event was sponsored by Ampol Petroleum and run by West Australian Surf Riders Assoc (WASRA).
During the contest big seas destroyed the scaffolding construction holding the judges stand. Steel scaffolding poles and timber planks littered the reef after Mother Nature’s had had her way with the structure.
