On the March Long Weekend in 1967 members of the City Beach Surfriders Club travelled from the Southwest to Augusta on a surf exploration trip. Augusta is the nearest townto Cape Leeuwin, the furthest south-west corner of the Australian continent.
The wind was favourable for Augusta’s south facing beaches and the lads had a surf in the Southern Ocean at the mouth of the Blackwood River. They mixed with the locals and managed to change the sign in the front window of the town’s café from Café to Face. And also brush their teeth in the petrified wooden water wheel (circa 1890) that used to pump water to the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse and lighthouse keeper’s cottage. A fun time was had by all😊.
