Former Yallingup tradesman Jarryd Foster is one of Australia’s best big wave surfers.
He is a real water man and an accomplished shortboard, longboard and tow-in surfer.
Bill Gibson (Cowaramup). “I remember Jarrad as being one of the cheekiest grommets around. With his mates, Mick and Dan Corbett, they were always playing pranks, breaking boards, charging big waves and generally causing their parent havoc. They were a handful!
At the 2000 National Longboard Titles held on the Sunshine Coast QLD, I drew the short straw and had to room with the Rat Pack. Don’t know why, but I always seemed to draw a room with wayward grommets at National titles but here I was again! I remember before leaving Mick and Dan’s dad Phil asked me to make sure his lads didn’t run amuck too much. Why me?
Anyway, I’d been successful for most of the week. A night on the Red Bull and vodka resulted in a few items being thrown from the 3rd story balcony with minimal disruption, but all in all the lads were safe and sound 😊
On the last night and we’re off in the bus for a team dinner. We started to assemble on the footpath outside and I’ve jumped into the back seat to try and encourage the Groms to get an act. Just as the troops are about to board the team bus, this Commodore sedan comes belting around the corner sideways, misses the bus, mounts the kerb and winds up in this guy’s front lawn, hubcaps rolling down the street. The driver hits reverse, backs onto the street and continues to speed off. The rat pack are front seat for the action and of course Jarrad is the one with the mouth and has offered a few words of youthful wisdom to the driver as he has sped off. Not finished yet! We hear screeching tyres as this guy flies around the block and pulls up right opposite the bus. This guy jumps out and makes a beeline for Jarrod. This guy is a big lad and looks like ‘Brute Barnard’.
Our senior statesman Dave Ellis is the first to spring into action. He walks over to the car takes the keys out and drops them down the drain. By this stage I can see steam coming from this guy’s ears. I’ve slid the back window of the bus open, jumped out and had just reached this guy as he is about to thump Jarrad. I grabbed this guy by the ears and pushed his head up against the windscreen of the bus. At this stage I’m just wondering how hard this guy is going to hit me! Again, Dave Ellis to the rescue. He’s grabbed this guy in an arm lock that Bruce Lee couldn’t have escaped from!
By this stage the events had caused a commotion and a crowd had gathered in the street. Someone had called the cops and this guy was going nowhere😊
We all went out for a delicious meal. Grommets peaking with a great story of their youth and newfound respect for some of the old boys. Hey and if you run into Dave Ellis in a dark alley watch out, he’s deadly!“
Jarryd won the 2015 Oakley Big Wave Awards in Sydney for his charge down a massive wave at Cow Bombie, near Gracetown WA in August 2014. He was awarded a $20,000 cheque and an Oakley tow-in board by Al Bryne.
Jarryd “I had to scramble to borrow a wetsuit and borrow some boards and luckily for me I got towed into this wave, on all borrowed gear, and it’s turned out to be the biggest.”
Editor: “I snapped the following shots of Jarryd tow-in surfing stormy north swells at Eagle Bay in Meelup Regional Park WA in June 2019.”
Jarryd now lives, works and surfs in the Mid-West at Kalbarri WA.
