By the early 70s, the word was well & truly out about uncrowded waves in Southwest WA. Word spread quickly via surf magazines and movies after the 1969 Australian Titles held in solid waves at Margaret River & Yallingup. (First round held at Scarborough WA).
Vance & Nancy Burrow (San Diego), Tom Hoye (Santa Cruz), John Malloy, Pat Bloomer, Leon Thomasian and other Californian surfers migrated to WA seeking the solitude of those country waves.
In this post we feature the Burrow family’s country lifestyle.
En-route to OZ in the 70s Vance & Nance Burrow toured NZ in a 50s Vauxhall before settling in WA.
Initially the Burrow’s lived in a Guest House on the beach front at Scarborough WA. (Now the site of Observation City).
In the late 70s the Burrow’s moved down south and rented a small cottage in Meelup Valley.
Vance is a musician and music teacher. He toured OZ with Taj Mahal (American blues musician) and played with Western Flyer (WA blues band) in the late 70s.
In the southwest Vance & Nance played with the Wildwood Trio at the Caves House Sunday Session at Yallingup. Wonderful afternoons in the beer garden with good music and punchy lead vocals by Gina Pannone wafting down the valley.
In the early 80s Vance and Nancy were sponsored by the Rice bros at Sealines Fibreglass surfboards in Capel WA.
Many thanks to the Burrow family for sharing their early SW surfing memories.
