In 1979 champion Oz surfer Ian ‘Kanga’ Cairns was guest of honour on ‘This is Your Life’ (Australia) TV program which aired nationally on TV Channel 7 honouring his surfing achievements.
The weekly program hosted by Roger Climpson featured a famous Aussie who was lured to the NSW TV studios on some false pretence and then shoved in front of the cameras and a live audience for the half-hour show. Family, friends and other people from the celebrity guest’s life came on and told stories about them and showed clips.
Among those giving testimonials and anecdotes about Kanga were WA surfers Arty Sherburn (RIP), Barry Day, Max Hickson and Charles ‘Chuck’ Morton-Stewart (RIP). Max Hickson was flown back to Australia from England to appear as a special guest on Kanga’s ‘This is Your Life‘ TV show.
Ian Cairns. “What a buzz. It was a huge show back in the day. Great to see Artie Sherburn again. He and I were WASRA Open and Junior State Spring Champions at Isolated in September 1967. Our home break. Every weekday morning and every evening and 12 hours every weekend and holiday. Strangely, our local wave in Laguna California is quite similar to Isolated in Cottesloe”.
