Yallingup surfer Jake ‘The Snake’ Paterson defeated 19-year-old Hawaiian wildcard Bruce Irons to win the 1998 Mountain Dew Pipe Masters in Hawaii. Jake (age 30) was trailing in the dying seconds of the final before launching his 7ft 4in JC Hawaii Surfboard by John Carper into a solid Backdoor barrel.
The rest is history, contest judges awarded him 9.6 (out of 10) for his buzzer beating wave and Jake became the first WA surfer to win the coveted Pipeline Masters.
In 2009 Jake’s surfing mate Taj Burrow won the Billabong Pipeline Masters and Claire‘Bevo’ Bevilacqua won the Women’s Pipeline Pro Hawaii.

Jake has retired from competing on the Pro Tour and now coaches pro-surfers on the WSL pro circuit.
