1950s Ian Scott’s Austin A40 sedan

In 1950s City Beach surfer Ian Scott toured metro and South West beaches in his Austin A40 sedan chasing waves with his surfing mates.

The Austin A40 Devon 4-door sedan (and similar 2-door A40 Dorset) were marketed by Austin from 1947 to 1952. It was the first post-war saloon produced by the Austin Motor Company in Great Britain.

In the next photo Ian Scott and Brian Cole are searching for waves at City Beach in 1957. The boys are leaning on Ian’s Austin A40 sedan. On the roof of the car they have their hollow marine ply surfboards and WW2 Flying Suits. Brian’s homemade Malibu surfboard (top) was 10ft and Ian’s Toothpick surfboard was 14 ft. The flying suits were used by surfers in the 1950s to keep warm between surfs. They were referred to as Bears Suits.
