Dunsborough surfer and W.A. Surf Gallery curator Mick Marlin is off to Sydney shortly for a very special occasion.
North Narrabeen Boardriders club is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
Mick grew up at Narrabeen and learned to surf there in the early sixties.
The local surfers formed a board riding club in 1964 to give them a voice on the beach as there was a lot of opposition against surfboards from the surf lifesaving club and the local council.
The council was going to ban surfboards from all of Sydney’s northern beaches because of the danger of loose surfboards floating into the flagged swimming areas.
The club, led by its first president Doctor Robert ‘Doc’ Spence, one of Australia’s leading surgeons, took on the local council and won, having the law rescinded.
Mick was an inaugural committee member and the club’s first junior champion.
The club went on to become the most successful club in the world, winning multiple club events and the Surf League many times.
Club members included world champion Damien Hardman, Terry Fitzgerald, Mark Warren, Col Smith, Nathan Hedge, thruster designer Simon Anderson and big wave charger Laura Enever.
Surfing WA judge and Surf Beach surfing instructor Doug Kitchingman, a former club president will also be attending the celebrations.
