The Contacio surf break at north Scarborough derives its name from the former Contacio Motel, which was located behind the break and dunes along the West Coast Highway. In the 1960s and 70s, the motel, with its modern Spanish look, stood just north of the White House. Later, the business was relocated and transformed into the Contacio European Cafe, Bar Lounge at the corner of Scarborough Beach Road and West Coast Highway in Scarborough. This building was demolished in late 2018 and investors want to build a hotel and apartments on the old Contacio bar site.
