In 1974, Barry Day was one of WA’s top surfboard riders and worked in the surf industry before he transitioned to play league football for West Perth in the WAFL. He was a key player in West Perth’s premiership team in 1975 (he kicked 8 goals) and shared the Best and Fairest title at the club in 1978. He represented Western Australia in 1977 and 1978 before joining Essendon in the VFL (pre-AfL) and played 15 games in 1979 and 1980. He crossed to Collingwood in mid-1980 but leg injuries took their toll, and he returned to surfing.
