The Deck

The Deck at Yallingup is a gathering place for the elders (and younger) of the local surfing community to meet and assess the conditions before deciding to go surfing. Many issues are discussed with varying input from the group. These include

  • Comments on the current surfing conditions which lead in turn to excuses why they are not going out ranging from “too big, too small, too windy, too crowded” etc.
  • Rants about SUP riders, car parking and backpackers camping in the car park.
  • Health issues ranging from skin cancers, wrecked knees, back and hips, knee and hip replacements, shoulder surgery, together with more serious conditions such as prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction.
  • Reminiscing – “Back in the Day” stories about no wetsuits (footy jumpers instead, no leg ropes, long swims after loose boards and of course, how big the waves were (you could see Caves House from the line-up).

It is also referred to as “the peanut gallery” due to the comments from the gathered experts on the surfing ability (or lack of) of those in the water.

It is also a place where the beach scene is studied, birthdays are celebrated, old friends and past mates remembered.
