WA surfing pioneer Jim Keenan and his partner Janice Standen attended a Beach Boys 2005 concert at Hollywood Bowl USA. These are their memories of the event.
The passing of Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys triggered a memory from 2005 when along with my partner Janice Standen were touring the USA.
This particular incident took place in Los Angeles where we were currently staying at the Hilton Garden a beachside motel.
Feeling a little thirsty as Aussie’s do, we decided to visit a liquor bottle shop in close proximity. Upon arrival, I noticed a VW Camper with a malibu board tied to the roof. Before long the owner noticed my interest and accent and an engaging conversation eventuated.
As I was about to leave, he asked what we were doing the next day. Nothing really, I replied.
Would you like to visit the Hollywood Bowl he asked? Indeed, we would, thinking it was to view only trip.
The Beach Boys are playing it’s a big evening he gestured. I will pick you up at the Motel. I thought to myself, bullshit he won’t turn up!
How wrong I was, he arrived with his partner and an esky full of booze and tucker.
We will not be driving all the way as the traffic is heavy, he said a bus is awaiting our arrival. Sure enough a bus was awaiting and full of surfy bums and Esky’s. It wasn’t long before they were mimicking our Aussie accents and asking about lives in Australia. It was a fun trip and the Beach Boys were unreal doing their show in a glorious setting.
Unfortunately, I lost the contact details of my hosts. The pics are of the Hollywood Bowl USA.

WA surfing pioneer Jim Keenan prepared this slideshow tribute to the late Dave Williams with background music by the Beach Boys.
Jim Keenan “The content is not all surfing but is a pointer to how our social lives blended with surfing. I do not want to appear selfish re other contributions to SDS, but those early days were the creation of Yallingup and Margs which is now renowned.”
