American ex-pat John Small relocated to Scarborough Beach, WA in the early 1980s. An avid surfer and photography enthusiast, he helped found the Wavewalkers Longboard Club at Scarborough. His WA (Metro, SW, mid-West & NW) and Indonesian surf photos have appeared in WA, East Coast and International magazines and newspapers. He also produced surf videos.
John has retired and relocated to Thailand. He spends six months each year teaching yoga at Ashrams in India and no longer surfs.
John has kindly donated his extensive 1980s–90s surfing memorabilia—magazines, media cut-outs, stickers, photos, and videos—to the WA Surf Gallery at Aravina Estate Yallingup. The Surf Gallery and Surfing Down South will feature highlights from his collection on their social media platforms.
Wavewalkers Longboard Club
The Wavewalkers Longboard Club began in 1996, following the opening of Western Australia’s first specialist longboard store, Longboards Scarborough, by Ross Rutherford. At that time, the Indian Ocean Longboarders Club was the only longboard club in Western Australia. The Waveriders Longboard Club was founded in Scarborough in 1999, with members from various metropolitan beaches between City Beach and Sorrento. John Small came up with name Wavewalkers.
Waveriders Social Surfing Club was created in February 2009 and is located in Scarborough, Western Australia. (Private Facebook group).
