In 1971 West Country Surf Magazine published a story on the State Surfing Titles held at Margaret River. It featured a Ric Chan photo of City Beach surfer Craig Bettenay (age 14) riding a 4’8″ Cordingley twin fin surfboard in the Junior Mens division of the event. (Craig came 3rd in that event).
In 1973 Craig won the Junior Men’s State Surfing Titles held at Marg’s (his brother Stewart came 2nd in same event) and competed successfully at the National level during the 1970s.
In 1977 Craig surfed the North Shore in Hawaii with surfing champion Ian Cairns to gain big wave experience.

Craig was a also talented surfboard shaper. In the early 70s he learnt his craft shaping for Cordingley Surfboards in Subiaco and Jolimont, In the late 70s he shaped for Tom Hoye at Cowaramup and manufactured boards under his own name in Dunsborough with former Cordingley craftsman Steve ‘Blue’ Nicholson.
