1963 The Word is Femlin

The family of the late Arty Sherburn (4th January 1947 to 28th March 2023) donated his vintage surfing memorabilia to the WA Surf Gallery at Aravina Estate, Yallingup. This post is based on an article in one of Arty’s old surf magazines. Rest in Peace Arty.

In December 1963, Sports Magazine Pty Ltd in Sydney published Sports Magazine (2/6 pence), featuring a surf riding section and an article on women’s board riding by Bill James called “The Word is Femlin.”

Pearl Turton NSW (winner of the first inter-state girl’s board riding championships). “I often dream about being able to ride in the international Championships in Hawaii. But I’m afraid it will stay a dream. I can’t see myself being able to afford the £400 in fares to get there.

The Narrabeen Carnival will sponsor a board rider’s trip Hawaii. “It will be a fellow, of course.” “I even heard someone is sponsoring a junior.”

“Oh, I do wish they’d sponsor a girl!”
