Bonzer, Bells & Bobby

Bondi’s Robert Conneeley burst onto the surfing scene in the early 1960s winning the Juniors at the first Surfing World Championship held at Manly in 1964. He followed that up by winning the contest at Bells Beach in 1965. The surf at Bells that year was huge, some claim the largest surf ever for any surf contest outside Hawaii. Robert was also good friends with Bobby Brown widely regarded as Australian surfing’s next star, tragically killed in a pub brawl.

Rob ‘Bonzer’ Conneeley now a long time resident of Margaret River, talks about his win at Bells Vic in 1965 and the late Bobby Brown NSW.
