This post features a Seniors Surfers article published in Sage magazine UK in 1997. The article titled Senior Board Members was written by Jeremy Hart with photos by John Small. It features surfing comments from veteran WA surfers Mick Marlin, Mark Lane, John Small & Dave Ellis.
Extract Dave Ellis comments.“I’d rather have a five-foot wave than a naughty.”
Note. Dave is now unwell in a hospice in Busselton. Mick and Mark continue to enjoy surfing; John Small moved overseas and is no longer surfing.
This story was published nearly 30 years ago and the lads were regarded as seniors back then 😊

American ex-pat John Small relocated to Scarborough Beach, WA in the early 1980s. An avid surfer and photography enthusiast, he helped found the Wavewalkers Longboard Club at Scarborough. His WA (Metro, SW, mid-West & NW) and Indonesian surf photos have appeared in WA, East Coast and International magazines and newspapers. He also produced surf videos.
John has retired and relocated to Thailand. He spends six months each year teaching yoga at Ashrams in India and no longer surfs.
John has kindly donated his extensive 1980s–90s surfing memorabilia—magazines, media cut-outs, stickers, photos, and videos—to the WA Surf Gallery at Aravina Estate Yallingup.
