Surfing Royality – The Redman family

Ralph Redman (a surfer from NSW) and his wife Jill migrated to WA in 1970 after an exploratory visit in 1967-68. In 1971 the Redmond’s moved from the SW up to Geraldton to escape the cold SW winter. Ralph found good waves from Geraldton to Kalbarri and enjoyed his time in the Mid-West region. In 1972 the family left the Geraldton region and returned to the SW with first son Patrick (born 1971) and continued building their brood.

The talented goofy footer settled into the solitude of free surfing and skin diving. He didn’t get involved in competitive surfing. Ralph was featured surfing Margaret’s on the cover of a 1972 Tracks Magazine.

Elder son Patrick was twice Australian windsurfing champion.

Daughter Melanie Redman-Carr is a former West Australian professional surfer. Melanie was twice runner up to World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley. She is the only female surfer to win the Margaret River Pro event four times. Mel’s daughter’s Willow & Poppy are now competing successfully in State Junior contests.

Youngest son Justin ‘JR’ Redman has won numerous State Titles, four National Longboarding championships across various age groups, and competed in three World Longboard Tour events. He also has won the Yallingup Malibu Classic Open Division a record 11 times.

The Redman’s are a strong South West surfing family.
