Dave ‘Mr Pin Line’ Ellis

Busselton’s Dave Ellis is a surfer, sailor and boat builder.

Dave has an artistic bent and studied art at school and Art Tech. He is constantly exploring innovative design mediums.

He is an artisan and makes hand-crafted trophies for Board Clubs and surf competitions and does some male modelling.

SURFBOARD DESIGNS

Dave has worked in the surfboard production industry for over 50 years. He has worked for surfboard builders Dibben & Cole, Len Dibben, Cordingley, West Coast, Blaxell and Star Surfboards on a contract (piece rate) basis.

He acquired his nickname ‘Mr Pin Line’ from the high level of detail he puts into his surfboard designs.

The design on the board on the left was inspired by Dave’s thumb print. Dave copied his thumb print image onto the board and added colours.

HAND CRAFTED TROPHIES

Over the years Dave has also made hand crafted trophies for many Board Clubs and surf competitions, including the City Beach Board Club, Indian Ocean Longboard Club and the Yal Mal and Whalebone Classic.

For the 10th Whale Classic held at Isolated at Cottesloe, Dave used an ancient Japanese Raku ceramic technique to create the colourful trophies.

MODELLING

Back in the 60s Dave used to strut his stuff on the cat walk at Boans Dept Store in Perth City with Len Dibben and others. He still has what it takes as his photos still appear in magazines and on front covers.

In 2000 Dave was featured in Saga Magazine from the UK. It is a lifestyle mag and they did a story on Dave being an over 50 surfboard rider in Aust. The following image of Dave surfing Injidup Point in WA appeared in the Mag.
