1933 North Beach coastline

North Beach is a northern coastal suburb of Perth. Its coastline is located between Mettams Pool and Watermans Bay and its main surfing beach is Tom’s.

Tom Blaxell (WA Surf Industry Pioneer) – This picture of North Beach taken in 1933 shows Tom’s surf break where the coastal track takes a tuck inland to what would be the junction of North Beach Road and West Coast Drive. Not a surfer to be seen and so many unridden waves!

Mike WynneTom’s surf spot was named after Tom Wardle who started ‘Tom the Cheap’ supermarket chain back in the 60’s. Tom had a supermarket on the corner of North Beach Rd and West Coast Hwy – hence the surf break out the front was named Tom’s.

Scarborough surfer Peter Bevan’s family bought a shack at Waterman’s in ‘51.

Thanks Tom, Peter and Mike for sharing your early North Beach memories.
