80s +

1980s Uluwatu Bali images by Ric Chan

Recent media coverage has reported big swells hitting Indo and in particular Uluwatu on the south-western tip of the Butik Peninsula of Bali. The media packages have included video footage of possibly the longest wave ever ridden at Uluwatu.

Back in the 80s, NZ surf photographer Ric Chan was running Cheaters Night Club on the Kuta strip and doing photo shoots in Indo waves.

Ric recalls a misadventure in big water at Uluwatu during the 80s. The final score card was Big wave 1 : Ric 0.

Ric ChanI was commissioned to do water shots for a movie company back then, and they gave me a camera inside a huge water housing, to get the shots.

I got nailed by a cleanup set that was almost as big as the other day. It took me about 2 hours to get back in after losing my fins.

I was totally worked over, but I’m still alive.

I won’t be doing that again!

Here are some of Ric’s photos of Uluwatu in 1985.
