Smoke and Mirrors

Surf photographers are creative animals and they have been known to enhance their images for assorted reasons.

1960-70s surf photographer Greg Woodward held a photo exhibition titled ‘The Dazzling Young Riders’ at Nyisztor Studios, 391 Canning Highway Melville/Palmyra from 6-21 May 2017.

Greg used poetic license to enhance some images at the 2017 photo exhibition.

He modified this photo to enhance presentation.

Image #1. 1967 Greg Laurenson surfing Rocky Point. (This image is on display at the WA Surf Gallery Yallingup).

To get the required eye focus on his exhibits, Greg reversed the negative and cropped his ‘67 photo of Greg Laurenson at Rocky Point so the image aligned with a ‘67 photo of Jim King surfing City Beach in a similar pose.

Image #2. Eye focus images at the Exhibition.

Top: 1967 Greg Laurenson and Jim King eye focus images.

Bottom: (Left) 2017 Greg Woodward with GL image. (Right) JK images.

Greg created several pieces of art work from this image.

Image #3. 1968 Rabbits Beach at Yallingup.

Greg showed flare by adding a classic arch to his ’68 Rabbits Beach photo.

Image #4. Yallingup classic Arch – double tube.

Greg added artwork to his ‘68 Rabbits Beach photo to create this image.

Image #5. Midnight Point Break.

And there is more…….. Greg used this photo to create more art work.

Image #6. 1969 Injidup Point by Greg Woodward.

Greg – “I made this artwork from three photos. 1.Trees from South Point Cowaramup Bay (on left), 2. Waves and headland at Injidup Point (in middle) and 3. Brian Hood surfing at Scarborough Beach (at right). I photocopied them for contrast, coloured the photocopies with inks, cut out the shapes and glued them all down to make a collage. So no digital – all hard copy. More like painting than photography.”

Image #7. Golden Summers
