Vintage surfboard returned to its original owner after 40 years

On the weekend a 1976 surfboard which had been on display at the WA Surf Gallery was returned to its original owner on the East Coast.

This is Mick Marlin’s (WA Surf Gallery team) lead up to the hand over.

A great result for the W.A. Surf Gallery at Aravina Estate Yallingup.
Noosa surfer and author Stuart Scott visited the gallery while on holiday in W.A. a few weeks ago. Stuart posted some photos of the boards on display on his Facebook page and got a reply from Peter Gilson who recognised one of the boards. It was his!
Peter’s mum had saved like mad to buy her son his first board when he was young. The board was a Southernman with spray job from Ulladulla. It was stolen from the family shed, along with a lawnmower and other items eight months later.

Here was his board in the display. It had been bought at a garage sale by Mick Rea in Perth a few years previously and loaned to the gallery for display. I answered Stuart’s post and we got the wheels in motion.

Mick Rea phoned Peter, who is on the Sunshine Coast and agreed to give the board back to its first owner. Bill Gibson was off to the National Longboard Titles on the Tweed Coast and put the board in his luggage to be reunited with the owner at the titles this weekend.

Yesterday Peter Gilson was finally reunited with his beloved board courtesy of WA’s Bill Gibson, at Cabarita Beach, on the NSW north coast.

The story has attracted media attention and should run on the 7pm ABC News on Sunday night 12 Aug 2018.

Great outcome 😊
