60s

Mitch’s first surfboard

In the 1960s young Ian ‘Mitch’ Mitchell lived and surfed at Cottesloe.

Mitch got his first surfboard in 1966 and this kick-started his surfing career. He was recruited by Tarni Board Club and then later the reformed Cottesloe Board Club.

These are Mitch’s comments and photos…

Mitch: In 1966 at age 14 I got my first ever surfboard.

It was an 8’11” Cordingley from 329 Hay Street Subiaco and cost $88.

I was concerned it was too short and would spin out 😊

My Cottesloe surfing mate Phil Taylor had a 9ft surfboard.

My mother bought me a parka and matching boardies, which you normally only had if you were in a board club – this was a particularly exclusive board club, as I was the only member! Phil Taylor, Ricky Lobe, George Simpson and Ducky Dermer gave me shit for having a parka and matching boardies and not being in a board club!

Michael Bibby was my neighbour in Cottesloe. He was older than me and a member of the Cottesloe Board Club and then Yallingup Board Club. And a bloody good surfer…
