Ken MacKenzie’s surf contest judging tool

Former State surfing champion and surfboard builder Ken MacKenzie has been a spotter for judges at amateur and Pro surfing contests held in the Margaret region for many years.

To assist him maintain an accurate record on contestant’s rides during heats, Ken designed a manual judging tool to record each surfer ride and shows whether he/she rode right or left.

The base of Ken’s judging tool is divided into sections representing right and left waves and uses coloured golf tees (representing surfers contest colours) to record waves ridden.

Ken used the manual surf contest judging tool successfully in the SW before the introduction of today’s computerised judging systems.
