Ian Cairns surfing Cottesloe in 1967 – Surf Poem by Greg Woodward

WA surf photographer and writer Greg Woodward composed this surf poem and snapped the shot of Ian Cairns (age 15) surfing his home break Isolated Reef at Cottesloe in 1967.

Ian Cairns – Cottesloe 1967.

Spider boy hooks onto the wave with spider web eyes

crouching, bent legged

hand in the foam

eyes on the future

Is standing up and turning on the wave before it starts to break

Lumpy blue board more an idea than it is

Mushy, soft

sea breeze ocean rolling and easy.

Former Cottesloe surfer Ian Cairns won six WA State Titles (1967-72) and in the early 70s headed to the north shore of Ohua in Hawaii to test himself in Hawaii’s powerful waves.

In Hawaii Ian won major surf riding contests in the mid to late 70s and was influential in establishing the world professional surfing circuit
